In what will come as a huge relief for FC Barcelona, new signing Dani Olmo is all set to make his debut tomorrow against Rayo Vallecano as La Liga have approved his registration.

This comes from Mundo Deportivo, who claim that in the next few hours, La Liga will authorise Barça to register Olmo for the long-term absence of Andreas Christensen, as they did recently with Inigo Martínez, taking advantage of the absence of Ronald Araujo.

Barça had already generated some fair play with the departures of Clement Lenglet, Ilkay Gundogan, Mika Faye and Vitor Roque, but not enough to be able to register Olmo.

However, they will be able to do that now with the fair play generated by Christensen’s absence through injury.

As they did with Vitor Roque and Martinez using Gavi and Araujo’s absences in the past, Barcelona can now use 80% of Christensen’s salary to register Olmo.

The registration, according to the regulations of La Liga, has several conditions.

Firstly, ‘the registration of the replacement player will not be allowed if the duration of his contract is longer than the next season and the club does not have a balance of the Sporting Squad Cost Limit or registration capacity for that season’.

In addition, the amount of the maximum excess ‘shall be pro-rated in proportion to the remaining duration of the season from the registration of the player replacing the injured player’. Essentially, Olmo will now only be registered for the 2024/25 season via this method.

Moreover, Barcelona do not have to cancel the registration of the Danish player as long as they do not have the 25 first-team players covered, as has happened with Araujo or last season with Gavi.

Interestingly, the medical report based on which La Liga have approved the registration is said to indicate that Christensen would be out for four months, but the player’s camp suggests that he will be sidelined only for two months.

So there is some grey area over the situation but as things stand, Olmo is all set to be registered and can make his debut tomorrow against Rayo Vallecano.
