The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended controversial cross-dresser, Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky, for alleged abuse of the naira, spraying of notes, and currency mutilation.
Bobrisky was detained at the EFCC’s Lagos Command following his arrest in Lagos on Wednesday night.
Confirming the arrest on Thursday, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale stated: “Bobrisky is with us. He was arrested last night in Lagos and he is at our Lagos command. We arrested him for alleged abuse of naira notes, spraying of naira notes, and currency mutilation, among others. We are very serious about restoring the dignity of the naira.”
Oyewale added, “Though our investigation is still ongoing, but he will definitely be charged to court soon.”
Bobrisky has recently been involved in several controversies, including calls for his arrest by activist Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, over his transgender lifestyle. Despite his release from police custody, VeryDarkMan expressed determination to ensure Bobrisky faces legal consequences.
However, in response to discussions on cross-dressing and sexuality, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, clarified on Channels Television’s Politics Today that while cross-dressing may not conform to societal norms, it is not a criminal offense under Nigerian law. Adejobi emphasized the need for evidence to substantiate accusations, noting that individuals accused of cross-dressing often face allegations of other crimes, but cannot be arrested without proof.
