Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, announced plans for the launch of a local security outfit by the state government before May 2024.
He stated this during an All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders’ meeting in Makurdi on Tuesday,
Governor Alia emphasized that this initiative aims to complement the efforts of existing security agencies in tackling the security challenges confronting the state largely caused by killer herdsmen. He disclosed that the administration is already in the process of procuring Hilux vans and motorcycles to facilitate the mobility of the security outfit across the state’s diverse terrain.
Expressing appreciation for the efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and security agencies in ensuring the nation’s security, Governor Alia highlighted the importance of the state-owned security outfit in safeguarding Benue communities, thereby enabling farmers to resume agricultural activities on their farmlands.
Benue State has been plagued by attacks attributed to suspected Fulani herders, leading to the displacement of about three million indigenes who have sought refuge in Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps.
