Abia Governor Alex Otti has taken a significant step by signing a major bill into law in the state.
The bill he signed into law repeals the payment of pensions to former Governors and their Deputies, a practice initiated by the previous administration.
By this law, former Governors such as Senators Orji Kalu, TA Orji, Okezie Ikpeazu, and past Deputy Governors would not be entitled to pensions.
The bill, which was passed by the Assembly on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, is now officially named the “Abia State Governors and Deputy Governors Pensions (Repeal) Law, 2024.”
Governor Otti emphasized that governance should not be driven by self-interest, which he believes undermines the essence of government.
“Even prior to the enactment of this new law, our stance on discontinuing the practice of providing pensions and allowances to former government officials has been evident. This law solidifies our commitment to that principle,” Governor Otti remarked during the signing ceremony on Thursday.
