The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has given a fresh update concerning its nationwide strike that has paralyzed activities in Nigeria.
Speaking on the issue, the NLC announced that it remains on strike.
Following a six-hour meeting in Abuja, the Federal Government affirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to increasing the ₦60,000 minimum wage offer. After the meeting, the NLC stated that they would decide their next step after consulting with their leadership today.
In a post on X on Tuesday, the NLC wrote, “Until we hear from our organs at our meeting scheduled for today, 4th June, we are still on strike.”
The organized labour began an indefinite strike on Monday to demand better pay for workers.
This strike led to a meeting between the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, and labour leaders in Abuja.
The meeting concluded with an agreement stating, “Further to the negotiation by the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage (NMW) and subsequent withdrawal of Labour from negotiation, the leadership of the National Assembly intervened on 2nd June, 2024. The organized labour declared a nationwide strike on Monday, 3rd June, 2024, to drive home its demands.
The Federal Government, in the national interest, convened a meeting with Labour held in the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation on Monday, 3rd June, with a view to ending the strike action.
The President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria is committed to a National Minimum Wage that is higher than ₦60,000.”
