The University of Benin has taken decisive action by indefinitely suspending its Student Union Government (SUG) following an incident involving an attack on the Edo State Labour Party candidate, Olumide Akpata.
University Registrar Ademola Bobola issued a statement on Monday, confirming the suspension’s immediate implementation starting from April 29, 2024.
According to the statement, “The university management has received the report of the panel constituted to investigate the incidents that occurred in the Faculty of Law and the University’s Senior Staff Club on Friday, April 12, 2024.”
“After due consideration of the report by the management, the Vice Chancellor has approved the suspension of the university’s students’ union,” the statement continued.
The suspension requires all union officers to relinquish possession of union properties to the Dean of Students’ Affairs by 4 pm on Tuesday, April 30, 2024. Additionally, a Caretaker Committee comprising representatives from various academic bodies will oversee students’ affairs during the suspension period.
The university community has been notified of these developments, and former union officers are expected to comply with the directive accordingly.
