The Southern Kaduna Peoples Union has debunked claims that Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, is opposed to the creation of Gurara state from the present Kaduna State.
According to SOKAPU’s National President, Samuel Tabara-Kato, Governor Sani’s administration has been inclusive and supportive of the creation of the Gurara state.
Tabara-Kato made this known while addressing a press conference in Kaduna on Tuesday.
“Southern Kaduna should believe in Governor Sani’s inclusivity in his government,” Kato said.
Kato also emphasized that state creation is a right enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution and not a battle.
“State creation is a right to the framers of the Nigerian Constitution. State creation is not a battle, it’s about allowing people to respect themselves,” he explained.
He noted that the proposed Gurara State will comprise 12 local government areas and boasts a large landmass, rich in agricultural and mineral resources, making it a viable standalone entity.
Kato said SOKAPU has set up a committee to present a request to the National Assembly for state creation, which requires the signature of the people.
“The notion that the governor is not in support of Gurara State is misleading. Available facts indicate otherwise. We urge our people to remain united and not allow misinformation to create division,” Kato said.
He also noted that the elite and traditional leaders in the region are in support of the creation of the Gurara state.
According to him, with the House Committee on Constitution Review reopening the window for state creation proposals, SOKAPU is working to refine its proposal to meet constitutional requirements.
Consequently, he called on the people of Southern Kaduna to remain calm and law-abiding and to challenge stakeholders and well-meaning Nigerians to address the matter amicably.
Our correspondent reports that the development comes on the heels of the House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review proposing the creation of 31 new states in the country, including Gurara state. If the proposal is approved, Nigeria will have 67 sub-national governments.
