Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has issued a strong warning to traditional leaders in the state, urging them to put an end to illegal land encroachment and land grabbing to foster peaceful coexistence among communities.

The governor made this statement during his Eid-el-Fitr Sallah homage, “Gaisuwar Sallah,” at the Emir of Zazzau’s palace in Zaria on Tuesday.

He was represented by the Special Adviser on Traditional Affairs, Alhaji Muktar Shehu.

Governor Sani highlighted that the state government had been receiving several complaints regarding illegal land grabs by village and ward heads.

He emphasised that all land belongs to the government and stressed the importance of following due process when acquiring land, through the relevant authorities, to maintain peace and stability.

“The state government has received reports of illegal land grabs by village and ward heads. All lands belong to the government, and the proper channels must be followed when acquiring land,” he stated, calling on traditional leaders to help preserve the peaceful atmosphere in their communities to promote continued progress.

In addition to addressing the issue of land encroachment, Governor Sani also encouraged farmers to return to their farms, noting that security conditions in various parts of the state had improved.

The governor congratulated the Emir of Zazzau, Malam Ahmed Bamalli, on the successful completion of the Ramadan fast and expressed his joy over the peaceful Sallah celebration.

Earlier, the Emir of Zazzau reiterated his directive to district, village, and ward heads to desist from unfair treatment of their subjects.

He also warned them against collaborating with illegal miners operating within their domains.

The Emir emphasised that before any mining activity could proceed, proper verification by the relevant authorities must take place, and the emirate must be duly informed.

He further cautioned village heads against encroaching on land allocated to the Ministry of Forestry, reminding them that they are only permitted to manage properties belonging to the emirate.

“All lands belong to the government,” he reiterated, adding that anyone found occupying such land illegally would face legal consequences.

The Emir also reminded traditional titleholders holding double appointments to resign from one position, in accordance with the state government’s directive, or face dismissal and disciplinary action.

He called for unity, brotherhood, and greater collaboration among traditional leaders to ensure the continued peace and stability of the region.
