UPDATE: Kamala Harris gave a glimpse of major themes of her 2024 presidential bid, as she spoke to campaign staff in her first full day atop the ticket.

At the Wilmington, DE headquarters, rebranded around Harris with signs reading KAMALA and even a state flag of California, Harris made a biting contrast to her Republican rival, Donald Trump.

Referring to her past jobs as a prosecutor, Harris said that “in those roles I took on perpetrators of all kinds. Predators who abused women. Fraudsters who ripped off consumers. Cheaters who broke the rules for their own gain. So hear me why I say: I know Donald Trump’s type.”

As much as she focused on Trump in her remarks, Harris signaled an economic message as a central campaign theme. She later said that “building up the middle class will be a defining goal of my presidency.”

Harris is retaining the leadership of what was the Biden campaign, with chair Jen O’Malley Dillon staying on to lead the effort.

Harris also got some significant exposure for her remarks, with all the major news networks carrying them live.

PREVIOUSLY: Joe Biden called into his former campaign headquarters today to tell staffers that exiting the 2024 race as the “right thing to do,” but told them to “embrace” Kamala Harris.

“She’s the best,” Biden said.

The president made the call as Harris was making her first visit to the rebranded campaign headquarters in Wilmington, DE, with “KAMALA” signs displayed throughout.

“I know yesterday’s news was surprising, and it was hard for you to hear. But it was the right thing to do,” said Biden, who has been isolation as he recovers from Covid.

“I know it is hard because you poured your heart and soul into me. …I think we made the right decision.”

Biden pledged to go out on the campaign trail for Harris.

“The name has changed a the top the ticket, but the mission hasn’t changed at all. And by the way, I’m not going anywhere. I’m going to be out there on the campaign with her, with Kamala…. We still need to save democracy. Trump is still a danger to the community, a danger to the nation.”

Harris said that she had asked Jen O’Malley Dillon, who was chair of the Biden-Harris campaign, to run hers, and she had accepted.
