Residents of Na’ibawa Eastern Bypass in Sabuwar Abuja Quarters, Kano State, have raised concerns over a prolonged power outage that has crippled socio-economic activities in the area.
Speaking with The PUNCH on Tuesday, some residents lamented that the power outage, which has persisted for 10 months, has forced many businesses to shut down.
“This is the 10th month we are experiencing a power outage, and it seems nobody is bothered about our problem,” a resident, Ahmed Abdurrahman, lamented.
According to Abdurrahman, the issue began when the community’s transformer became faulty.
While the Kano Electricity Distribution Company eventually provided a new transformer, residents were asked to contribute about N2 million as reconnection fees.
“How can the company ask us to contribute such an amount of money when people are already struggling to feed themselves?” he asked.
Another resident, Sani Mohammad, expressed frustration over the situation and called on the state government to intervene.
“We have been appealing to people to contribute the money, but the response has been poor. We are now calling on Governor Abba Yusuf to come to our aid and restore power supply to our area,” he pleaded.
Efforts to reach the Head of Corporate Communications at KEDCO, Sani Sani, for comments proved abortive, as he did not respond to multiple calls from The PUNCH correspondent.
