Governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf.

In a determined effort to tackle poverty and promote economic self-reliance, Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has launched the second phase of the Livestock Fattening Programme under the Kano Agro-Pastoral Development Project.

Arewa PUNCH gathered that the initiative, valued at N2.3 billion, focuses on empowering women across the state’s 44 Local Government Areas. Each beneficiary in the current phase received three small ruminants (goats) to support livestock entrepreneurship.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Governor Yusuf highlighted his administration’s commitment to using innovative and inclusive strategies to combat poverty.

He disclosed that 7,158 goats have been distributed to 2,386 women beneficiaries so far. The program also plans to distribute 1,342 cows and 1,822 rams to women and youth in subsequent phases.

The governor stressed the importance of accountability and warned beneficiaries against diverting the livestock for unintended purposes.

According to a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, the initiative aims to integrate women and youth into the agricultural value chain, enhance household income, and reduce dependency on government assistance.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf said:

“This initiative is another step in our efforts to support women and youth in Kano State. Through this empowerment program, we are providing tangible support to help our people achieve economic self-reliance.

“Under this phase of the Livestock Fattening programme, we have distributed 7,158 goats to 2,386 women across all 44 local government areas. This initiative is not just about distributing livestock. It is about creating opportunities, enhancing livelihoods, and ensuring that every beneficiary has a means to sustain herself and her family.

“Our vision is clear—we want to empower our women and youth by integrating them into the agricultural value chain. This is why, beyond this phase, we will be providing an additional 1,342 cows and 1,822 rams to more beneficiaries. This program, worth N2.3 billion, is designed to foster economic independence and reduce reliance on government support. We firmly believe that when we invest in women, we invest in the future of our state. By equipping them with the necessary resources, we are enabling them to become self-sufficient and contribute meaningfully to the economy,” Yusuf added.

“I want to make it clear that this initiative is meant to transform lives, and I will not tolerate any misuse of the resources provided. I am urging all beneficiaries to take full advantage of this opportunity by properly managing the livestock to grow their businesses. The government will closely monitor the implementation of this program to ensure accountability and transparency. Together, we will continue to build a Kano State where hard work is rewarded, and every individual has a fair chance to succeed,” the governor remarked.

Arewa PUNCH further reports that this effort has been widely praised as a transformative step toward improving livelihoods, strengthening food security, and fostering grassroots economic growth in Kano State.
