The Kano State Government has warned residents of the state to desist from open defecation by using available toilets, instead of public places.
The Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dahiru Hashim gave the warning in a statement on Wednesday after attending a strategic meeting with UNICEF to advance goals of making Kano State Open Defecation Free, on Tuesday.
“To underscore the government’s commitment, the commissioner visited some public conveniences across the metropolis to assess their condition.
“We can improve our environmental hygiene and help eradicate communicable diseases by shunning open defecation in the state,” the commissioner said.
He disclosed that 26 out of the 44 Local Government areas of the state had been declared ODF, adding that at the meeting, there was discussion on collaborative strategies to ensure that the remaining 18 LGAs achieve ODF status by 2026.
“I attended a strategic meeting with UNICEF to advance our goal of making Kano State Open Defecation Free (ODF) today. With 26 of our LGAs already declared ODF, we discussed collaborative strategies to ensure that the remaining 18 LGAs achieve ODF status by 2026.
“To underscore our commitment, I visited some public conveniences across the metropolis to assess their condition and personally urged all Kano citizens to use the available toilets instead of defecating in public areas.
“By doing so, we can improve our environmental hygiene and help eradicate communicable diseases. Together, let’s build a cleaner and healthier Kano State,” the commissioner said.
