Bollywood filmmaker and producer Karan Johar has filed a lawsuit in the Bombay High Court against writer-director Bablu Singh, producer India Pride Advisory, and Sanjay Singh, associated with the upcoming film Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar, set to release on June 14. Johar is seeking an immediate injunction to halt the film’s release. Additionally, he has filed an interim application to suspend the film’s release during the ongoing litigation. The plea was presented before Justice RI Chagla.

Karan Johar files a lawsuit again Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar makers

The Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani director asserts that he has no affiliation with the film and claims the makers are unlawfully exploiting his name without authorisation. Johar argues that the film’s title explicitly mentions his name, thereby capitalising on his brand, reputation, and image. The distribution of public promotional assets, such as the trailer and movie posters, prominently features his name, which he claims has caused severe damage to his reputation and goodwill.

Johar cited that this misuse has breached his rights to privacy, publicity, and personality. Despite the fact that his full name is not used together in the title Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar, it is clear, given his stature in the media, who is being referred to. This implicit reference, Johar argues, exploits his established identity in the industry.

Karan on professional front

Karan Johar’s newly produced film Kill, starring Laksh Lalwani, is scheduled to release on July 5, 2024. Recently, Johar has produced Yoddha starring Siddharth Malhotra and Ae Watan Mere Watan featuring Sara Ali Khan. The 52-year-old producer-director has an intriguing lineup for 2024 and 2025, including Takht, Bad News, Jigra, Indian 2, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, and The Bull.

Johar’s lawsuit emphasises the unauthorised use of his name and the potential impact on his personal and professional reputation, seeking judicial intervention to prevent the release of Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar.
