Karla Sofía Gascón Won't Withdraw Oscar Nomination Amid Resurfaced Tweets, Denies Posting About Selena Gomez

Karla Sofía Gascón has addressed a few topics amid her resurfaced tweets controversy.

The 52-year-old Emilia Pérez actress, who recently made history as the first openly trans person ever to be nominated in an acting category at the Oscars, came under fire last week after her past controversial and offensive tweets resurfaced.

She has already released one apology for the tweets and deleted her X, formerly known as Twitter, account in the wake of the scandal.

During the new interview over the weekend, she told CNN she once again was offering the “most sincere apologies to all the people who may have felt offended.”

She then shared that she would not withdraw her nomination, stating, “I cannot renounce a nomination because what I have done is a job and what is being valued is my acting work. And I cannot renounce a nomination either because I have not committed any crime nor have I harmed anyone, I am not a racist, nor am I anything that all these people have taken it upon themselves to try to make others believe that I am.”

She continued, “As a member of a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and deeply regret having caused pain. All my life I have fought for a better world. I believe that light will always triumph over darkness.”

In addition, she addressed one alleged tweet that had been circulating about her Emilia Perez co-star, Selena Gomez.

The translated post that showed up online read, “She’s a rich rat who plays the poor b-stard whenever she can and will never stop bothering her ex-boyfriend and his wife.”

Of the Selena Gomez tweet, she shared, “Of course that’s not mine. I have never said anything about my partner. I would never refer to her that way.”

Interestingly enough, Variety points out that Karla‘s interview was set up by her, not by Netflix.
