Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo
The counsel to the Indigenous People of Biafra and a human rights lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has urged the governor of Anambra State, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, not to use the newly unveiled ‘Agunechemba’ security outfit for political purposes or intimidation of opponents.
Ejiofor, an indigene of Anambra State, who was reacting to the newly passed Anambra State Homeland Security Law, said as the November 2025 Anambra governorship election approaches, Soludo and his team should ensure that the ‘Agunechemba’ security outfit remains free from political interference.
Soludo had on Saturday, formally assented to the Anambra Homeland Security Bill and also unveiled a special security operation, named ‘Operation Udo Ga-Achị,’ to tackle insecurity and criminality in the state.
Speaking during the unveiling, the governor described security, law and order as pivotal to the attainment of the state’s vision of a liveable and prosperous homeland.
Soludo said the law, which also establishes the state’s new vigilante architecture, known as ‘Agunechemba,’ will be a complement to policing by intelligence and dedicated to special tasks with its personnel comprising over 2,000 special forces drawn from the Army, Police, DSS, NSCDC and Navy.
Soludo averred that the outfit, which will have Special Forces on idolatry, touting, drug and cultism, is designed to ensure that Anambra is liberated from the grip of criminal elements, who he said are now engaging in “lucrative criminality.”
But reacting to the development in a statement issued on Monday, the human rights lawyer, Ejiofor, said the security outfit must not fall into the hands of political predators or be misused as a tool for oppression, intimidation, or harassment of opponents.
He said, “I have carefully reviewed the Anambra State Homeland Security Law 2025, which establishes the ‘Agunechemba’ security outfit. My reflections align with the wisdom of a popular Igbo adage that says, ‘Osita di mma odibara gboo,’ loosely translating to ‘it is still early in the day to make things right and achieve better results.’
“This underscores the opportunity to lay a strong foundation for the outfit’s success.
“As the November 2025 Anambra governorship election approaches, I urge the state governor and his team to ensure that the ‘Agunechemba’ security outfit remains free from political interference.
“It must not fall into the hands of political predators or be misused as a tool for oppression, intimidation, or harassment. Instead, its core objective – ensuring the security and welfare of the people – must be preserved above all else.
“Security is a shared responsibility. Every citizen has a role to play in restoring Anambra State’s former glory. Together, we can achieve a safer and more prosperous homeland.”
