One of the most vibrant and snappy scores this Emmy season is for AppleTV+’s Kristen Wiig comedy series, Palm Royale, a complete homage to the Henry Mancini-Latin jazz infused 1960s swinging era soundtracks (which by the way this series is set in). The most immediate reference that comes to mind is Mancini’s toe-tapping score for the 1963 Audrey Hepburn movie Charade.
It just so happens that Palm Royale composer Jeff Toyne has a Mancini connection — which he talks about here on today’s Crew Call.
The Canadian composer and UCLA film music grad grew up being schooled by the great Oscar winner Jerry Goldsmith, which we also chat about here.
Toyne’s career has spanned 25 years as a composer on such indie pics like Life on the Line with John Travolta and Sharon Stone, and Dirty Girl with June Temple, Milla Jovovich and William H. Macy, however, this year in a career first, he lands not just one, but his first two Primetime Emmy noms for Palm Royale in Outstanding Main Title Music and Outstanding Music Composition for a Series (Original Dramatic Score). It’s two of the series’ 11 Emmy nods including Outstanding Comedy Series.
Toyne expounds on landing the Palm Royale gig and the musical inspirations for a show in which SNL vet Wiig plays the odd duck who just wants to fit in at a 1969 Palm Beach, Florida high society club.
