Kenny Omega has been on the shelf for almost a year after undergoing emergency surgery for diverticulitis and fans wondered when he would finally be able to compete inside the squared circle again. While he has yet to compete in a ring, Omega has made it clear he wants to end his wrestling career like Sting.
Sting and Darby Allin had an incredible match against The Young Bucks at AEW Revolution, where they would beat The Young Bucks and retain the AEW Tag Team Titles, as Sting would retire undefeated. Many fans felt Sting got one of the best sendoffs in pro wrestling history as well.
While speaking to Fightful, Kenny Omega talked about the future of his in-ring career. Sean Ross Sapp asked him whether he wanted to have the same kind of sendoff that Sting did and end his career.
“To be selfish, I can tell you—I was at Sting’s final match. He was the first professional wrestler I ever saw on a screen, and I was like, ‘I’ve got to get more of this. I’ve got to see more of this.’ To see the type of sendoff he got, which could not have been more perfect…
Is there part of you sitting at home and thinking, ‘Yeah, I’ve done a lot of stuff, and it is great. I’ve accomplished these things, but it sure would be nice to have that kind of sendoff.'”
Kenny Omega admitted that it would be nice if he got to end his career the way Sting did. Reflecting on Sting’s retirement and even Bryan Danielson’s, he acknowledged that while Bryan had to go out with a loss and a dramatic storyline twist, his final performance was incredible and truly inspirational.
Omega admired the idea of wrestling at the highest level on AEW’s current roster and delivering such a memorable performance as a last match. He thought that if Bryan’s match indeed was his final one, it would be an ideal way to go out. In that sense, Omega admitted he might feel a bit envious of Bryan’s farewell, even though it ended in a loss and came under less-than-ideal circumstances.
“Sure, it would be nice—oh, absolutely. You know, with the way that Sting was able to retire, and even in the way Bryan was able to retire… Sure, he had to go out with a loss, and there was even an attempted murder in the storyline. But, all that being said, he was able to go out with an incredible in-ring performance, and it was nothing short of inspirational. To wrestle at the highest level on our current AEW roster and deliver that kind of performance, and to call that your last match—if indeed it is his last match—I think that’s a great way to go out. In that sense, if it were over for me, I’d be a little bit jealous of the way Bryan was able to go out. Even though, like I said, it was with a loss, and not under the most favorable of circumstances.”
Kenny Omega made it clear he wants to compete at the upcoming AEW x NJPW Wrestle Dynasty event on January 5th, so that’s currently his focus at the moment. Therefore, we will have to wait and see when The Best Bout Machine will hang up his pro wrestling boots and if he will have a sendoff similar to Sting, as fans would love to see that happen.
