Kenny Omega talks barbed wire in wrestling.

While the former AEW World Champion is out of action recovering from a bout of diverticulitis, he recently spoke with GameSpot to review Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth. While discussing weapons, Omega noted the similarities between wrestlers using them as part of their identities.

“As a wrestler, there are things that you associate with your own identity, with your own personality,” Omega said. “For some wrestlers, it might be a mask. For fans that know a wrestler, for example, like The Undertaker, his source of energy was the urn. He’d have to take the urn everywhere that he went. We have Sting over in AEW, he always carries a bat. They’re like an extension of the person.”

Omega pointed out that seeing Ichiban go from his day job to “suiting up” with a barbed wire bat is similar to how Kenny Omega the wrestler is different from Kenny Omega the video game player. He then went on to discuss how he’s been affected by barbed wire in the ring.

“I’ve been on the receiving end of a barbed wire-covered bat, and I think that if you were to take it to the streets and that was going to be your only means of defense against gang members around the world, I think you’d still probably be okay,” Omega added. “Those things can do damage and I’ll never be the same. My 2023 was full of many cuts, many bruises, many stitches, a lot of bloodshed, and a lot of it had to do with barbed wire covering blunt force objects. So I know what that’s like. I know it all too well.”
