Barcelona’s left-back Alejandro Balde is currently dealing with some muscle discomfort, and coach Hansi Flick is now faced with a tough decision regarding the left-wing position ahead of the upcoming match, claims a report from SPORT

Balde’s fitness is less than optimal, and given the intense fixture schedule between now and the end of 2024, there is a strong emphasis on avoiding unnecessary risks with players dealing with physical issues.

The young full-back has been struggling with muscle discomfort in recent days, which has prevented him from reaching full fitness for the match against tonight’s opponent.

In fact, the full-back missed training on Thursday, joining his teammates only on Friday when he felt better. However, Flick and his coaching staff are taking a cautious approach.

Uncertainty looms for Flick

They have decided not to take risks with players who have a history of muscle injuries, like Balde, especially in a season that promises a gruelling schedule.

This situation leaves uncertainty about whether Balde will travel with the team to Vigo for the match. Based on Friday’s training session, it seems likely that he will be part of the squad, as no reserve full-backs were called up for training.

The big question, however, is whether Flick will choose to start Balde or opt for Gerard Martin, who has been the go-to option whenever Balde has not been available to start.

Likely alternative for Balde

Martin has regularly been trusted by Flick as an alternative on the left wing. If Balde does not make the starting lineup, it is expected that Martin will take his place alongside Jules Kounde, Pau Cubarsi, and Inigo Martinez in the defence.

With the ongoing challenges of player fitness and the demands of the season, it remains to be seen whether Balde will feature in the starting XI or if Martin will step in to fill the role once again.

Either way, the decision will be crucial in ensuring Barcelona’s defensive stability as they continue their campaign.
