Kieran Trippier wants to leave Newcastle United this month and Everton are interested in bringing him in before the transfer window closes.

The 33-year-old was brought in as a key figure in the first team in January 2021 and remained so until the end of the last campaign, but that situation appears to have changed this season.

The right-back was on the bench for Newcastle’s Premier League opener against Southampton last weekend, remaining an unused substitute as Tino Livramento played in his usual position.

Trippier is the club’s vice-captain and would have worn the armband on Saturday as Jamaal Lascelles is out injured, but Bruno Guimaraes was handed the captaincy instead.

The Athletic report that Trippier is not interested in being a bit-part player at St James’ Park and is keen to move on this month to pursue first team opportunities elsewhere.

Everton have been quick to express their interest in signing the defender, who turns 34 next month, although they would be looking to do a loan deal.

Talks are underway but the Toffees will not be the only side interested in snapping up the man with 54 England caps to his name. There is certainly interest in him from the Saudi Pro League.

Speaking before the 1-0 win over Southampton on Saturday, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe suggested Trippier is in his plans, but he will be competing with Livramento for the right-back slot.

‘Physically, Tino is in a good place,’ said Howe. ‘He hasn’t had any issues through pre-season.

‘We believe in him, and really like his qualities and what he adds to the team. But he’s got serious competition in Kieran, and it’s going to be fascinating to see how those two players compete. They’re two top talents and two amazing characters.’
