About 80 residents of Amasaman in the Ga West District of the Greater Accra Region over the weekend benefited from a free medical screening and surgeries exercise organised by the Korean Foundation for International Health Global Alumni (KOFIHGA) (Ghana Chapter).

The two-day exercise, which was funded by Korean Foundation International Healthcare (KOFIH), performed 42 eyes surgeries and 38 general operations.

The exercise, which brought surgeons across the country and held at the Ga West Municipal Hospital, formed part of the annual general activities of KOFIHGA to give back to society.

In an interview with the Ghanaian Times, the President of KOFIHGA, Dr Ralph Armah, stated that they were expecting 106 cases in the two-day period, however, 80 people came.

According to him, these cases were individuals who were recruited from the earlier medical screening exercise, and the Doctors found their cases to be different and could be operated on.

Even though, he said the surgery exercises was free including medications, 26 individuals did not turn up.

Dr Armah, who is also the Medical Director of the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, noted that on January 10 and 11, the organisation organised a free medical screening for over 537 patients showed up.

He added that the beneficiaries were screened and treated for various diseases, including eye treatments and free drugs.

“This is not the first time we are embarking these kind of activities, last three years we did same activities at James Town, we did same at Nsawam prisons last two years and last year because of the floods at Ada we did same there.”

“This year we decided to embark on this outreach at Amasaman because it is highly populated and very urban, and we also, through our speaking to colleagues, realised that there are not any specialist surgeons at the Amasaman District Hospital,” he highlighted.

Moreover, Dr Armah noted that the annual exercise sought to ensure quality health care for all and enable the community members to know their health status towards living a healthy lifestyle.

Some of the beneficiaries expressed gratitude to KOFIHGA, KOFIH and all the medical team for the kind gesture, stating that, they would not have known they had a problem or if even they did, they would not have had the means to go get surgery.
