Kristen Wiig is heading back to sunny Palm Beach as Apple TV+ has renewed its hit freshman series Palm Royale for a second season.

Loosely based on Juliet McDaniel’s novel Mr. and Mrs. American Pie and produced by Apple Studios, Palm Royale is a true underdog story that follows Maxine Simmons (Wiig) in 1969 as she endeavors to break into Palm Beach high society. Armed with fabulous ensembles and accessories, as well as her quick wit, Maxine attempts to cross that impermeable line between the haves and the have-nots. The dramedy asks the same question: “How much of yourself are you willing to sacrifice to get what someone else has?”

At Deadline’s Contenders TV event in April, Wiig shared more insight into her character.

“Maxine is very ambitious and will stop at nothing to get what she wants but that twist of being so sunny and positive while she is doing it, makes you think “Wait I think I like her.” We wanted to make her likable even though she was doing things that were not that likeable,” she said.

The Season 1 ensemble cast also includes Laura Dern, Allison Janney, Ricky Martin, Josh Lucas, Leslie Bibb, Amber Chardae Robinson, Mindy Cohn, Julia Duffy and Kaia Gerber. Bruce Dern and Carol Burnett guest star. Returning stars have yet to be revealed.

Abe Sylvia served as writer, executive producer and showrunner of Palm Royale under his Aunt Sylvia’s Moving Picture Company banner. In addition to Sylvia, executive producers also include Dern, Wiig, Jayme Lemons for Jaywalker Pictures, Katie O’Connell Marsh, Tate Taylor and John Norris for Wyolah Films, Sharr White, Sheri Holman and Boat Rocker.
