An initiative to provide extra tuition for all form three students in public Junior High Schools in the Krowor Municipality of the Greater Accra Region has been launched.
Sponsored by the Member of Parliament for the Krowor Constituency, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, the initiative is to prepare the students towards next year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
The beneficiary students numbering about 1,400 over the next four weeks would receive tuition in the four examinable core subject which include, Social Studies, Mathematics, English and Science.
Launching the initiative at Nungua in Accra on Wednesday, Dr Lartey said her resolve to promote quality education in her constituency remained unshaken.
She said quality education remained the surest way of bridging the development gap and as the MP for the area, she would do everything possible within her means to support the children especially as they prepared towards their final examination next year.
Dr Lartey explained that plans were afoot to include children in private basic schools in the area, however, that would be the second phase of the initiative.
She said it was her earnest expectation that the initiative would go a long way to build the confidence of students and pupils in their learning abilities, thereby increasing their self-confidence as they prepare towards their BECE.
“I commit to ensuring that all of us as stakeholders do our utmost best to give our future leaders the quality education, they so much desire,” she said.
The MP said the extra classes was to give extra attention to the students and also to get teachers to be more innovative and explore further teaching methods that bring both fast learners and slow learners at par in their studies.
She said as someone who recognised the full appreciation of the key education held in unlocking potential and wealth, every single investment in this regard was worth the effort.
The Municipal Director of Education, Mr Robert Bortey on his part, commended the Member of Parliament for the initiative and said the whole idea of extra classes was an opportunity for the students in the area.
He said the municipality was trying its best to ensure that, students in the municipality received the best of education, adding that “Some of your colleagues are sleeping by now and you have to take advantage of the situation.”
The Municipal Director stated that the students must recognise that they had barely one year to write their examination and take instructions from the teachers who would be teaching them.
Mr Bortey noted that apart from obeying the instructions of their teachers, the students must also build networks with their colleagues and ensure seriousness in their studies.
