EXCLUSIVE: Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon have launched Winter Coat Films, which has signed a first-look deal with Sony Pictures Television to produce scripted series for streaming and cable platforms. The Oscar-nominated husband-and-wife duo have partnered with producer Dani Melia, who will serve as president of Winter Coat Films.
“Kumail and Emily are a dream team – artists who bring humanity, humor and authenticity to everything they explore,” said Katherine Pope, President Sony Pictures Television Studios. “We couldn’t be happier to support them and their newly formed production company, which we know will be hugely successful.”
Nanjiani and Gordon most recently served as executive producers on Hulu limited series Welcome to Chippendales, which earned Nanjiani an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. They also executive produced and wrote the praised Apple TV+ anthology series Little America, which ran for two seasons.
“We are thrilled to call Sony our creative home as we launch Winter Coat Films,” said Nanjiani, Gordon, and Melia in a joint statement. “Following in the footsteps of Katherine Pope and her exceptional team, we’re committed to loving what we make and making what we love. At Winter Coat Films, we champion emotionally intelligent, intricately crafted popcorn entertainment that spans genres – comedy, drama, horror, and beyond. Our goal is to craft film and television for everyone, designed to make the viewer feel like they’re watching content made just for them,” they added.
Nanjiani is recurring on the current fourth season of Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building. He’ll next embark on a new standup tour and will be seen in the latest James L. Brooks film, Ella McCay. He also recently wrapped production as a guest star in the second season of Peacock’s Poker Face.
Gordon has written for shows including The Carmichael Show, Another Period, and Crashing. She is currently developing a Play-Doh movie with Jon Chu and Hasbro. Nanjiani and Gordon are repped by UTA, Mosaic, and Schreck Rose Dapello.
Melia was previously an executive at indie label Big Beach where she oversaw the development slate and produced The Farewell, starring Awkwafina. Most recently, Melia ran Local Time alongside Lulu Wang, where she executive produced the Prime Video series Expats, starring Nicole Kidman.
