Kyle Fletcher doesn’t see The Undertaker working as a character in wrestling today.
The Undertaker is arguably the most iconic character in wrestling. The undead wrestler terrified children for over thirty years in the WWE as he used all his brutality and supernatural powers to force his way to the top of the business.
He remained a huge star until his retirement in 2020 and even had a starring role in the main event of WrestleMania 40 this year. However, Kyle Fletcher doesn’t think he’d fit in as well for a 2024 audience.
Kyle Fletcher appeared on SENQ Breakfast (H/T to Fightful for the transcription), where he discussed characters from the past like Hulk Hogan and The Undertaker.
The Australian mused that wrestling has changed a lot in recent years and is now based more in reality. That is partially why he uses his real name as his character’s name. Kyle Fletcher noted that a supernatural character like The Undertaker is not as relatable, which is why he may not have landed as well today as he did in 1990.
“In today’s day and age in pro wrestling, it’s a lot more based in reality.” Kyle Fletcher said. “The characters you see on TV, part of the thing that makes them so special is a lot people can relate to those characters. They can relate to wanting to punch their boss in the face or those kinds of things as opposed to a supernatural character like the Undertaker.”
“It’s very much contextual-based. Back in the day, The Undertaker worked and became one of the biggest characters of all time. I don’t think it works quite as well in this day and age.”
Kyle Fletcher is set to take on Will Ospreay at Full Gear in a United Empire grudge match.
