Ally McCoist has urged Arsenal to avoid a deal for Paris-Saint Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe in the summer transfer window.
It is thought that Mbappe would ‘willingly join’ Arsenal at the end of the season because he it would allow him to follow in the footsteps of hero Thierry Henry.
Arsenal have been exploring a deal for the 25-year-old – considered as one of the best strikers on the planet – who helped France win the World Cup in 2018.
Mbappe is out of contract this summer and he had been expected to join Real Madrid but the Spanish club have been unable to reach an agreement.
PSG have an offer on the table should Mbappe decide to stay in Paris but they do not want to be held to ransom over wages and predict that he will move on.
That has seen other clubs register their interest, with Arsenal and Liverpool linked with moves, although the Gunners are reluctant to break their wage structure.
Scottish pundit McCoist, quizzed on talkSPORT if Arsenal should break the bank to bring Mbappe to the Emirates, said: ‘No. No chance.
‘Not only would you break it, you’d absolutely have to obliterate it and destroy it and once you do that, you know, it’s happening.
‘There’s knocks on the door, ‘He’s on this, I’m only on a quarter of that, I’ve scored this many goals’, etc etc.’
Asked if signing Mbappe would make Arsenal favourites for the Premier League title, Rangers legend McCoist added: ‘No, I wouldn’t [make Arsenal title favourites], I’d still pick Manchester City.
‘Listen I love the guy, I think he’s a tremendous player. I’ll never forget watching that World Cup final hat-trick live, one of the highlights of my football [career].
‘And it’s one of these situations where I’d probably like to see him move. He’s been there [at PSG] and I’m not sure I’m happy with the power that he’s got there either, remember that story about stakes in the club and he could have a say in this, have a say in that.
‘I think that there’s only one club that he’s got an opportunity to go to, Madrid. I think that’s the only one.’
