WWE has operated with a strict system of scripted television for decades. They have a team of writers for a reason, and it shows. Most performers stick to the script, and only a select few are trusted to improvise. Even then, it’s rare for anyone to have full creative freedom to write their own promos. LA Knight is one of those exceptions but knows not to push his limits.
LA Knight is three months into his reign as WWE United States Champion after he beat Logan Paul for the title in Cleveland Browns Stadium at SummerSlam 2024. Knight has defended the title five times, with his latest victory at Crown Jewel 2024.
In an interview with SPORTbible, Knight discussed his approach to mic work. He admitted that his preference for improvisation sometimes causes issues but said he tries to balance his style with WWE’s structured approach.
“Sometimes I get myself in trouble because I like to work a little more off the cuff and sometimes they (WWE management) like a little structure. I try to meet them in the middle on that and for me, I want to listen and react instead of thinking of all this prefab. It didn’t feel right to me. If I want to be as authentic as I can be and connect with everybody out there, I need to listen. Instead of going out there pre-planned, just being able to be authentically me has been a godsend. Sometimes I have to meet them in the middle but for the most part, they’re like, ‘We’ll let you do your thing but just don’t push it!’”
WWE’s trust in Knight allows him to stand out while still working within their system. His ability to find the balance has been key to his success.
We will have to see what he does next on the SmackDown roster. As United States Champion, he will always have a target on him. He is certainly set to wrap up 2024 in championship style.
LA Knight’s reign as United States Champion also shows his skill in adapting to WWE’s system. After all, he did ruffle some feathers in TNA. His ability to balance creative freedom and structure keeps him effective in his role. The challenges of holding the title will test his consistency as the year continues.
