Girona are set to complete the signing of FC Barcelona midfielder Oriol Romeu imminently, with the Spaniard heading back to his former club potentially on a loan deal.

The veteran star is already back in Spain after leaving Barça’s pre-season camp in the USA and a move to the Blaugrana’s local rivals could be announced by the end of the week.

Girona manager Michel had always insisted that he would love to have Romeu back at the club after the midfielder joined Barcelona last year and ended up losing prominence despite a strong start.

No move for Pablo Torre

Apart from Romeu, previous reports had suggested that Girona also had an eye on two other Barcelona players – Eric Garcia and Pablo Torre – both of whom spent the last season on loan at Montilivi.

However, now, Mundo Deportivo reports that Girona have made no move whatsoever to re-sign Torre on another loan deal this summer.

Indeed, club sources have told the Spanish publication that there has been no request so far from Girona to renew the loan deal for the 21-year-old midfield prospect.

Torre’s loan stint at Girona was far from memorable as he found it hard to establish himself as a regular in Michel’s team.

The former Racing Santander prospect ended the 2023/24 campaign with just 29 appearances (five starts) across all competitions, managing a solitary goal and two assists.

Given the minimal impact that he had at the club, it should not come as a surprise that Girona are not overly interested in taking Torre back to the club.

Torre hoping to stay at Barcelona

Furthermore, the young midfielder himself is leaning towards staying at Barcelona even though there is intense competition for places in the midfield department.

Having recovered from a hand fracture in pre-season, Torre is impressing onlookers with his performances on the field, scoring two goals in two friendlies against UE Olot and Manchester City.

The young midfielder is hopeful that his goalscoring ability and recent performances are enough to convince Hansi Flick to keep hold of him this summer.
