Only earlier today, FC Barcelona announced that Pau Cubarsi had signed a new contract until 2027 with a mammoth €500 million release clause.

The new deal is indicative of the progress that the 17-year-old has made since breaking into the senior setup this season.

Seen as one of the five ‘untouchables’ in the squad heading into the summer transfer window, Cubarsi is set for an even more prominent role next season.

Girona dream of signing Cubarsi

Despite the 17-year-old’s status as a first-team regular now cemented at Barcelona, their Catalan rivals, Girona, dream of signing Cubarsi on loan in the summer, reports SPORT.

Sporting director Quique Cárcel and manager Míchel are crazy about landing the player, who moved to Barça from Girona’s youth system, on loan.

It must be noted that Barcelona president Joan Laporta met with Girona’s president of the board of directors, Pere Guardiola, earlier this week to discuss various issues.

Cubarsi’s loan exit is a scenario that, as of today, is only on the table and would be subject to a series of factors that would have to go hand in hand.

One of them, essential, is that Xavi gives the go-ahead for the operation, something he is not considering under any circumstances. He counts on him and is not willing to lose him for next season.

Girona, though, remember that Xavi also did not agree to the loan of Eric Garcia and it ended up happening last summer.

Man City influence?

Girona, for their part, are understood to be willing to do everything in their power to land Cubarsi on loan in the summer.

In order to achieve their objective, the Montilivi outfit has some cards they could play, one of which could be linked to sister club Manchester City.

Barça and Xavi are known to be interested in Man City superstar Bernardo Silva and there are also negotiations for Joao Cancelo to continue as a Blaugrana next season.

And Quique Carcel and Pere Guardiola might look to take advantage of this and try to convince Barcelona to loan out Cubarsi.

However, the player is committed to staying with the Blaugrana and helping them climb back to the top after a disappointing season. As such, Girona’s aspirations seem like a pipe dream.
