Days into Hansi Flick’s tenure, there is already a sense of clarity in Barcelona that the defensive midfield position will be critical in the German manager’s plans.

The coach has reversed the seemingly impossible situation of Oriol Romeu and counts on the player for next season. Moreover, Marc Casado is expected to see more prominence as well.

The shift to a double pivot, needless to say, also opens doors for several young La Masia prospects. Pau Prim is one such young talent looking to secure a place in the first team and SPORT provides an update on his situation.

Pushing for promotion

Last season was not very kind to the 18-year-old as he spent most of it with the Juvenil A team under Oscar Lopez. He did accumulate 26 call-ups with Barça Atletic but played only 356 minutes for Rafa Marquez’s side.

Prim feels hard done by his situation at the club, especially considering that his batchmates, including Hector Fort and Marc Guiu, and younger names like Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi have overtaken him in their progress.

Hence, he has set a target for himself to leave a mark at Barça Atletic this season and push for a place under Hansi Flick. The change in formation, after all, will only benefit his cause.

An all-rounder

At just 18 years of age, Prim stands out as one of La Masia’s top defensive midfielders and has all the qualities required to succeed in Catalonia. He is agile, composed on the ball, and versatile with his distribution on the field.

To succeed under Flick, however, the youngster must look to beef up his physique and resilience on the field as the new manager sees these as essential features in his midfielders.

Prim’s current contract with Barcelona runs until June 2025, and the coming year will thus be crucial in deciding his future. Failure to make his name could well force him to look for greener pastures.
