Labour Minister urges workers to be neutral, non-partisan

The Minister of Labour, Jobs and Employment, Mr Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, has expressed govern­ment’s commitment to protect and improve the livelihoods of the country’s workforce.

He indicate that the creation of decent jobs would not only impact the workers and increase produc­tivity, but also ensure sustainability of businesses towards accelerating economic growth.

The Minister made these remarks at his maiden meeting with the staff of the Ministry on Tuesday in Accra.

The meeting sought to afford the Minister the opportunity to introduce himself and to also share his vision with the staff of the Ministry.

Mr Pelpuo noted that as techni­cal experts in their various fields, more was expected of them to help deliver on the government’s mandate.

He has, therefore, charged the workers to be neutral and non-par­tisan in their attitude towards work, across all level in order not to fall into any trouble.

“You need to commit and dedicate yourselves to your duties, there are cut corners else you will run into trouble, don’t do anything that could create any trouble for you,” he added.

The Minister charged the staff to work as team with sense of commitment and responsibility towards leading this very critical sector, which plays a fundamen­tal role in shaping the nation’s workforce, protecting the rights of all Ghanaian workers and fostering growth through the formulation and implementation of labour and employment policies.

“I will welcome all your tech­nical expertise in shaping policies that would lead to the transforma­tion of the sector and Ghana as a whole,” he explained.

Furthermore, on his prioritise, the Minister noted that he would focus on promoting job creation and employment opportunities as well as work tirelessly to reduce unemployment and under employ­ment by supporting initiatives that create decent jobs, especially for the youth, women and vulnerable groups.

He said the government would collaborate with the private sector, educational institutions and devel­opment partners to enhance skills training, entrepreneurship and labour market access.

On Workers’ Rights and Social Protection, Mr Pelpuo stated that the government was committed to ensuring that every worker deserves dignity, fair treatment and protection.

He indicated that the Labour and Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Bill would be worked on with alacrity to improve workplace safety and strengthen social protection coverage for all workers while industrial relations and workplace standards would be reinforce systems for early indus­trial dispute resolution, collective bargaining, and social dialogue to maintain industrial peace and productivity.

Moreover, he expressed resolve to a broader dialogue with tripar­tite constituents in building con­sensus on matters of socio-eco­nomic importance.

The Minister then assured focusing on building the capaci­ties of staff as well as strengthen the institutions of the Ministry to improve service delivery.
