Lagos dislodges miscreants occupying pedestrian bridges
Officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps on Monday dislodged miscreants and beggars occupying pedestrian bridges in the state.
The state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this on his X handle on Monday.
According to Wahab, the enforcement followed complaints from the public concerning the activities of the miscreants and beggars which discourage pedestrians using the bridge.
PUNCH Online also reports that state government on Sunday urged residents to make use of pedestrian bridges and ordered the prosecution of pedestrians crossing the highways.
According to the commissioner, an enforcement operation led by Corps Marshal, Major Olatunbosun Cole (retd.) on Monday dislodged “touts and miscreants constituting nuisance on the Oshodi and Ikeja-along pedestrian bridges.”
Wahab wrote, “The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps #LAGESCOfficial aka KAI led by Corps Marshal, Major Olatunbosun Olaniyi Cole (Retd) earlier today conducted an enforcement operation to dislodge touts and miscreants constituting nuisance on the Oshodi and Ikeja-along pedestrian bridges.
“While we encourage Lagosians to desist from crossing the highways and use the pedestrian bridges, this enforcement will be conducted and sustained across the state and any person found constituting a threat to the safety of pedestrians on highways will be apprehended and prosecuted by the courts to serve as a deterrents to others.”
PUNCH Metro in an investigation in August 2023 revealed that most of the multi-million naira bus stop shelters and bridges erected in some parts of Lagos State to serve the state’s numerous commuters were no longer being utilised by those that they were meant to serve as they had been taken over by miscreants, mentally challenged and traders, thereby displacing commuters that they were erected to serve.
