The Lagos State Government has disclosed that the Green and Purple Line Rails are next in the state mass transit scheme after the completion of the Blue and Red Line rails.
The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, made this known in an interview with our correspondent on Sunday.
“There are supposed to be six (line rails). And we have done two now. Yes, there is going to be a Green Line and there is going to be a Purple Line. You can check. I think (the Green) is coming from Lekki Expressway up to Lagos Island. Then I think the Purple Line is coming from around the Redemption Camp towards the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to join the Blue Line,” he said.
The commissioner noted he might not be able to give the time the projects would start, but noted the state was looking for investors.
“We don’t know yet, but we are looking for investors for all of them. They’ve been in the Lagos State master plan right from the days of Asiwaju (Bola Tinubu as governor),” he stressed.
According to the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, the urban transport implementation agency of the state, the six rail systems that are differentiated by colours are: Green line, Purple line, Yellow line, Orange line, Blue line and Red line.
It is not certain whether the other rail projects will take off under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration which is now in its second term.
Omotoso highlighted that the projects are quite an enormous task and could not just be started and completed speedily depending on other factors including getting investors.
“I mean, God willing, (if) investors come in, we can start. It’s not something that you can say you want to do in a year or two years. We were able to do the Red Line because it shares the same track with the Nigerian Railway Corporation,” he added.
Last Wednesday, the Red Line Rail began partial operations in Lagos. It is a transport project connecting Lagos with Ogun State.
In May 2024, the state government unveiled its transport policy document expected to make transportation accessible, safe and available to residents.
Speaking at the inaugural event, Governor Sanwo-Olu stated that the transport policy was not just a document but a roadmap to a “brighter, more effective, efficient and sustainable future for Lagos.”
The governor also said the policy document became necessary to eliminate the barrage of transport challenges facing the state’s transport system, ranging from traffic congestion to pollution and inadequate infrastructures amongst others.
