The Lagos State Government has sought concerted efforts to end fire incidents in marketplaces as it begins the training and unveiling of Safety and Emergency Marshals.

The government, through the Safety Commission, said it had become important to have market representatives that would ensure emergency preparedness in Lagos markets to prevent fire disasters.

Speaking at Obanikoro Market, Lagos Island, on Thursday, the Director of Lagos State Safety Commission, Lanre Mojola, said the training was designed to avail the participants with knowledge of hazard identification, prevention, recovery, and response around markets.

He mentioned that the past fire incidents had cost the state in terms of compensation to victims and insurance costs to the market men and women.

He said, “Today, we have brought together a team of 50 people that were being trained in market safety and they will be the first set of market safety fire wardens in this market.

“We are trying to enlighten them so that we do not have any fire disaster. We are taking them on the causes of fire. The idea of leaving the electric sockets on after work, placement of the generator inside the shops and lack of fire extinguishers are improper.”

Earlier, the Technical Adviser of the commission, Seun Awojobi, explained that markets are vital to the economic development of the state and remain the hub of commerce and must be protected from hazards such as fire outbreaks, accidents and others.

The Chairman, Community Development Association of the area, Sunday Ogunlana, and the leader of Obanikoro Market, Lateef Iyaniwura, commended the commission for the initiative.
