The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos Safety Commission, has held a one-day seminar for schools across the state with the theme; “Building a strong cyber safety awareness.”
The event was held at Balmoral Event Centre, Ikeja, and several students from public and private schools in Lagos were in attendance.
The state government said on Monday, it would be sensitising Lagosians to cyber security as they join the world to observe awareness month.
The Director-General of the Safety Commission, Lanre Mojola, explained that the Internet offers boundless opportunities to learn, connect, and grow, just as he emphasised that it also comes with risks.
“Young people, in particular, are increasingly vulnerable to the dangers lurking online.
“Cyberbullying, phishing scams, identity theft, exposure to inappropriate content, and online predators are just a few of the challenges students encounter in cyberspace.
“Sadly, many students are unaware of the risks and become victims of these threats.
“Today’s event, conducted in partnership with the Safe Schools Alliance, epitomises the proactive approach we must adopt to ensure that our schools remain safe in both physical and digital realms by cultivating a robust foundation of cyber security awareness,” Mojola added.
He, however, emphasised that the Lagos State Government remained committed to eradicating cyber attacks hence the safety awareness seminar in schools.
He added that the commission decided to begin with the school children to protect them from being infected ab initio and to allow them to decipher right from the wrong information, and particularly not to fall into the temptation of joining wrong, non-educative and unproductive websites.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Sesan Ogundeko, said Lagos would want children to know the need to access the Internet and the implications of knowing what is good and what is bad for them, hence the need to inculcate a seminar of this nature.
In his remark, Dr Bisi Esuruoso, who is the Lead Resource of Safe Schools, Lagos, said the seminar was timely as it aimed to tackle cyber threats, thereby fostering a safer digital environment for everyone involved.
He said, “These cyber attacks are usually aimed at accessing, changing, or destroying sensitive information; extorting money from users through ransomware; or interrupting normal business processes.
Cyber safety is the safe and responsible use of information and communication technology.
“It is about keeping information safe and secure, but also about being responsible with that information, being respectful to other people online, and using good Internet etiquette.
“I am delighted to be leading the Safe School Lagos project that is for creating safety awareness and compliance in schools.”
