Lee Carsley has named his first (senior) England squad.
This is for the September internationals, two Nations League matches.
The first of these is away to Republic of Ireland on Saturday 7 September.
Then home to Finland on Tuesday 10 September.
Lee Carsley named as the interim manager whilst The FA supposedly take their time to decide on their log-term choice.
However, it appears that this is Lee Carsley’s job to lose, as it seems he has these six Nations League (home and away) group matches against Republic of Ireland, Finland and Greece as a trial. These matches in September, October and November.
England were relegated to the second tier of the Nations League, so surely they should top this group and see Lee Carsley go from interim to permanent before the year is out.
The England squad (see below) was announced at 2pm on Thursday afternoon.
Anthony Gordon widely expected to be named in it, despite Gareth Southgate treating him so abysmally at the Euros. Lee Carsley was England Under 21 manager when they won their Euros in summer 2023, Gordon starring and named player of the tournament.
One player sure not to be included was Kieran Trippier, having announced his international retirement earlier today.
So along with Anthony Gordon, has the likes of Nick Pope and/or any other Newcastle United players made this first England squad under Lee Carsley?
This is the full England squad for the September internationals from Lee Carsley, included in this official FA announcement – 29 August 2024:
Lee Carsley has named his England men’s senior squad to play Republic of Ireland and Finland in the UEFA Nations League this September.
The interim head coach has picked a 26-man squad, with the Three Lions’ travelling to the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Saturday 7 September before returning to Wembley for the game with Finland on Tuesday 10 September.
Among the selections are first senior call-ups for Newcastle United defender Tino Livramento, Lille midfielder Angel Gomes, Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White and Chelsea forward Noni Madueke, all players who have progressed through the development teams in recent years.
Carsley and his squad will meet at St. George’s Park on Monday to begin their preparations for the game in Dublin.
The squad
Goalkeepers: Dean Henderson (Crystal Palace), Jordan Pickford (Everton), Nick Pope (Newcastle United)
Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Levi Colwill (Chelsea), Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace), Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa), Rico Lewis (Manchester City), Tino Livramento (Newcastle United), Harry Maguire (Manchester United), John Stones (Manchester City)
Midfielders: Phil Foden (Manchester City), Conor Gallagher (Chelsea), Morgan Gibbs-White (Nottingham Forest), Angel Gomes (Lille), Kobbie Mainoo (Manchester United), Cole Palmer (Chelsea), Declan Rice (Arsenal)
Forwards: Jarrod Bowen (West Ham United), Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace), Anthony Gordon (Newcastle United), Jack Grealish (Manchester City), Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), Noni Madueke (Chelsea), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa)
So Anthony Gordon and Nick Pope do indeed get the call, whilst also a bonus surprise for NUFC as Tino Livramento gets his first senior England call. Ironically, Kieran Trippier helping to create room for him.
Or could it end up with four Newcastle United players in this England squad, as we have 33 hours of this transfer window still to go…
