According to Sportbladet, Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion will face off this summer for the signing of Eric Smith from St. Pauli.

Smith left Belgian pro League team Gent to play for St Pauli, where he has spent the previous three seasons.

The 27-year-old began his professional career with Halmstads BK in his home country of Sweden before moving to IFK Norrkoping and eventually Gent.

Smith’s career has taken off in St Pauli, where he played 26 times in the league this past season, recording one goal and three assists to help the team win the German second division.

Joe Rodon’s loan at Elland Road expires this summer, therefore the Whites will need to make some changes at the heart of their defense.

Leeds’ prospects of re-signing the Wales international have undoubtedly decreased after their play-off final loss to Southampton last month.

Eric Smith to Leeds United?

Daniel Farke could find Smith to be a valuable addition, even if Smith’s price might be inflated due to St. Pauli’s promotion.

Smith can be an ideal signing of Leeds

He is a powerful presence in the middle of the defense at about six feet three.

Having said that, his comfort level with the ball at his feet and preference for playing from the back make him a good fit for Farke’s tactical set-up.

Smith, who has a year left on his St. Pauli contract, would definitely like a shot at the Bundesliga. However, his club may be open to offers as they prepare for a new challenge in the top flight.

The player is similar to Ethan Ampadu in that he can play both centre-back and defensive midfield.
