Roy Keane believes Timo Werner will prove to be an astute piece of January business for Tottenham following his arrival on loan from RB Leipzig.

The former Chelsea forward joined Spurs this week on loan until the end of the season, providing cover for Heung-Min Son who has departed for the Asia Cup.

The Germany international is back for a second spell in the Premier League having joined Chelsea in a £52million deal in 2020. He spent two years in west London, scoring 23 times in 89 appearances before returning to Leipzig in 2022.

Werner scored 16 times for the Bundesliga side last season but managed just two this term having lost his place in the regular starting XI.

Werner could make his debut on Sunday afternoon against Manchester United – who enquired into a move for him before Tottenham swooped.

Former United captain Keane believes the 27-year-old will have to improve on his goal return while in north London but has backed him to prove himself in the Premier League at the second time of asking.

‘[His work off the ball] is a big bonus,’ Keane told Sky Sports.

‘It is obviously difficult to get real top class players in during January but I think he’s a good signing for Spurs.

‘He seems a good fit for them, the manager likes the on-field work but he will have to come in and score goals too, let’s not kid ourselves.

‘But he won’t be the first or last player to come to England, have a difficult spell, go away and come back a better and more mature player. So it is a good signing.’

Werner explained this week the presence of Ange Postecoglou during talks over a return to the capital made it an easy decision.

‘The talks with the manager I think was a really, really good talk,’ Werner said.

‘He gave me straight away the feeling that I need to join a club, what I want to feel when I talk to a manager.

‘Also the tactics and the style, how he wants to play, how he lets the team play, for me I thought straight away that it fitted perfectly.’
