Sen. Emma Nwaka, a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State, announced his departure from the party on Thursday. In his resignation letter titled “Time for me to quit,” Nwaka explained that he had initially chosen to keep his decision private but felt compelled to make it public.

Nwaka stated that his decision to leave the PDP was not made lightly but was the result of careful consideration of his political journey. He expressed gratitude for his five years of leadership of the Abia State PDP, highlighting that his tenure brought significant stability, peace, and electoral successes. “I am grateful for the honour of piloting the affairs of the Abia State Chapter of the party for five years. I am really happy I served without a whiff of any scandal instead, the period under my watch brought to the party uncommon stability, peace, and a winning streak. The party won two governorship elections back-to-back, controlled the State House of Assembly, and won about all the seats in the National Assembly in two general elections,” he said.

Nwaka also mentioned that he had distanced himself from the PDP and had not been attending its functions. “I resigned from PDP a long time ago and I have not been attending their functions. They have been inviting me. Let them allow me to rest,” he added. He clarified that he does not feel the need to be affiliated with any political party to serve his people and would make any future political alignments known if necessary.

In response, the PDP thanked Nwaka for his contributions. Abraham Amah, Head of the Abia PDP Media Team, stated, “Such a decision is personal, and issuing a resignation letter is not mandatory. We thank him for his enormous contributions to the party and wish him well in his future nonpartisan life.”
