The decline of WCW remains a hot topic in the wrestling world, with many factors often discussed as contributing to its downfall. Lex Luger is one of those who has offered his perspective on what led to the demise of the once-prominent wrestling organization.
The ”Who Killed WCW?” docuseries was produced by Dwayne Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions and the series premiered back in June, which ended up bringing the downfall of WCW back into the forefront again.
Many stars of the industry have given their thoughts on the matter already. WWE Hall of Famer Scott Steiner laid the blame on Brad Siegel and other senior executives at Turner Entertainment.
While speaking to Bill Apter of Sportskeeda Wrestling, Lex Luger expressed his view on who was responsible for WCW’s demise, stating that he believes AOL Time Warner and the corporate powers behind the company were looking for a way to exit the wrestling business. According to Luger, they did not want wrestling as part of their operations and took the first opportunity to shut it down, which ultimately led to WCW being merged with WWE.
“I have not seen the footage of that yet. I mean, I believe personally that, corporately, that AOL Time Warner and the powers-that-be for a long time were looking for an out. They just didn’t want wrestling as part of what they did, so first opportunity they got to close it out, which it ended up being merged with WWE, that was an easy decision for them.”
Even Hulk Hogan believes that WCW’s demise was due to executives and higher-ups. Regardless, WCW’s demise will always be a hot topic and that will not be changing anytime soon.
