LG Electronics, in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Kumasi – Premier International, has commissioned a solar-powered borehole to relief Ejisu Asaman of water crisis.
This initiative aims to provide a sustainable and reliable source of clean water to the community.
The community in the Ashanti Region has been hit with erratic water supply attributed to occasional breakdown of the community’s borehole.
The existing borehole at Ejisu Asaman, built in the early nineties, has gone through several renovations.
The regular breakdowns and repairs have drained the community.
Until some residents began to sink boreholes for private use, many turned to streams for water supply.
Stephen Boamah is Assembly member for Tikrom, Baworo, Asaman Electoral Area explains, "the only borehole has been faulty for a while. We have always experienced shortage water."
"We can't rely on streams for water, it is unhealthy. We needed a good source of water for domestic and commercial use", he added.
Akwasi Brobbey, a resident of the area, is worried about a possible disease outbreak in the community.
"We know water related diseases are common and spread easily, if the water we use is not from a good source, it is a big worry", he emphasised.
They are appealing to the government for a long term solution as they access temporary means to deal with the situation.
Through a financial support of electronic giant, LG, a solar powered borehole has been commissioned for the community.
Aside from dealing with the community's water needs, the solar system is a means of promoting renewable energy.
Representative for LG, Katakyie Afrifa explains the need for improving lives of people in communities.
"As part of the SDGs, the environment needs to be protected, the use of renewable energy is very important. In as much as we want to help we are also mindful of sustaining the environment", he added.
Mr. Afrifa added, "In other countries, we have often done this but we have now focused on Ghana to enrich lives. We are also partnering with forestry commission to green Ghana and contribute to environmental sustainability"

Meanwhile, Rotary Club of Kumasi-Premier International is encouraging the community to institute measures to maintain the facility.
Rotation Avinash Lakhani is President-elect, "We know they have a lot of needs as a community and the club can only continue supporting them if they take good use of what we have provided today."
