A Federal High Court in Abuja has issued an order restraining the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) from charging N10 million and N5 million for nomination forms for chairmanship and councillorship positions, respectively, in the upcoming local government elections.
Justice Emeka Nwite, who presided over the case, granted the interim injunction on Wednesday, according to court documents obtained on Thursday.
The plaintiffs in the suit—Action Peoples Party (APP), Action Democratic Party (ADP), and Social Democratic Party (SDP)—challenged the imposed fees.
The court’s ruling prevents KANSIEC from imposing or collecting the fees ahead of the local government elections scheduled for November 30, or any earlier date, pending the outcome of the plaintiffs’ originating summons.
The case has been adjourned to September 15 for further hearing.
The imposition of the fees has sparked widespread criticism, yet KANSIEC’s Executive Chairman, Professor Sani Lawan Malumfashi, insisted that the fees for the nomination forms would remain unchanged.
He defended the fees, arguing that they are necessary to cover the high cost of conducting the elections, emphasising that the guidelines are final and legally binding.
