LG polls: Nasarawa APC unveils chairman, councillorship candidates

The All Progressives Congress in Nasarawa State has announced the names of its candidates for the chairmanship and councillorship local government elections slated for November 2, 2024, across the 13 Local Government Areas of the state.

The Chairman of the State’s APC Primary Elections Committee, Tanimu Adamson, disclosed this on Friday evening while submitting the report of the recently conducted screening exercises to the party’s executives in Lafia, the state capital.

According to him, successful candidates emerged through consensus as agreed by the party in the state, and in line with article 20 of its constitution.

“The APC in Nasarawa State is a law-abiding party, thus after the recent expiration of the local government councils chairmen tenure, the party called for a general stakeholders meeting to deliberate on the way forward to conduct a peaceful, credible and transparent primary elections.

“We deliberated and agreed unanimously that it should be by consensus according to article 20 of the party’s constitution.

“We have therefore outlined credible candidates for the 13 local government areas that would run for the championship positions and councillors who will constitute the legislative arm and improve the image of legislation at the local government level so that there would be true democracy and provision of dividends of democracy”, he said.

Adamson listed the names of the successful candidates vying for chairmanship positions including; Safiyanu Isa (Akwanga LGA), Umar Dan-Akano (Awe LGA)  Jonathan Addra (Doma LGA),  Abubakar Madaki (Karu LGA), Adamu Aboki, (Keana LGA) and Idris Damagani (Keffi LGA).

Others announced were; Bitrus Agbawu, (Kokona LGA) Mohammed Haliru (Lafia LGA), Mohammed Ahmed (Nasarawa LGA), Iliya Aliyu (Nassarawa-Eggon), Isa Sani, (Obi LGA), Murtala Danmadami, (Toto LGA) and Ezekiel Jaga (Wamba LGA), respectively.

The committee chairman further stated that the candidates were subjected to screening and were certified by the party to have met the requirements according to the party’s constitution.

Adamson also noted that the committee ensured that those vying for councillorship positions across the 147 electoral wards of the state who also emerged through consensus, included females and those living with disabilities.

While expressing his gratitude to the State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, for his tireless efforts during the process, Adamson commended the party’s stakeholders for their support in the course of the exercise.

On his part, the APC Chairman in the state, Dr. Aliyu Bello, who received the report, appreciated the committee members for their sacrifices to ensure the growth of the party, and for delivering on their mandate within the stipulated time.

Bello, therefore, said the party would immediately present its list of successful candidates to the Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission to meet the deadline given by the commission.

He further expressed confidence that his party would win the forthcoming November 2 council elections in the state due to the calibre of its candidates.

While expressing confidence in NASIEC to conduct free, fair and credible LG elections, Bello urged other political parties in the state to participate in the polls to strengthen democracy.
