For almost three months, Atlético de Madrid have been one of the best teams in the world. Remaining on a crazy series of 15 victories in all competitions, the Colchoneros intended to continue their momentum this Saturday during their trip to Leganés. However, nothing went as planned in this afternoon which turned into a trap for the Madrilenians. In a white-hot Butarque, the Matelassiers quickly dominated the debates but Julian Alvarez (11th, 13th), Antoine Griezmann (26th) and Conor Gallagher (29th) came up against either the uprights or the gloves of an imperial Dmitrovic on his line which prevented them from opening the scoring at the end of a controlled first act. When they returned from the locker room, Atlético faded away.
Less concerned, Diego Simeone's men then saw the locals open the scoring on their first situation from a corner where Matija Nastasic dominated Pablo Barrios to deceive Oblak (1-0, 49th). From then on, the Colchoneros chased the score in vain. Against a regrouped Leganés, spaces were rare and Marko Dmitrovic continued to be sensational in his goals. At the end of the match, Antoine Griezmann failed to convert a penalty which could have allowed the Madrid club to snatch an important draw (90th). Lacking realism and luck, Atlético de Madrid therefore put an end to a series of 15 victories and tasted defeat even though their last one dated October 27 and a trip to Betis. Atlético remains first but Real Madrid can therefore take control of the championship on Sunday against Las Palmas.
