Real Madrid’s week will have been hectic. Between a match won with difficulty in Leipzig in the Champions League (1-0) and the announcement of Kylian Mbappé’s arrival in the Merengue locker room by Florentino Pérez, Carlo Ancelotti had difficulty preparing for the trip to Rayo Vallecano, 14th in Liga. And yet, Real Madrid needed success in this Madrid derby to maintain their lead over Girona, the pursuer.

Without Bellingham and with Rodrygo and Kroos left on the bench, the Merengues wasted no time in opening the scoring after a great breakthrough from Valverde, concluded by Joselu at the far post (1-0, 4th). A perfect start to the match, but the Madrilenians then slowed down after their goal and let Rayo evolve. And after a small hand from Camavinga in the area, punished with a penalty, De Tomas could quickly equalize (1-1, 27th).

A tired Real Madrid, Carvajal sent off

Everything had to be done again for Real Madrid, who were even pushed around by the Franjirrojos. Not very dangerous, Real did not worry Dimitrievski enough, who could easily prevent Joselu from achieving the double (59th). But apart from this action and a very well diverted free kick from Kroos (80th), the RVM goalkeeper did not really have much to do and the other Madrid club could even harbor some regrets for not having tried to play more than keep score. Madrid couldn’t do it and the expulsion of Carvajal at the very end of the match didn’t help anything (90th+5).

Before the Girona match on the Bilbao pitch on Monday, Real Madrid remains leader but therefore loses the opportunity to take a big lead over Girona. Still at the top of La Liga, the Merengues remain six points behind second, and eight behind the other Catalan rival FC Barcelona. They will have to pull themselves together against Sevilla the next day. For its part, Rayo Vallecano continues its sixth La Liga match without winning, but remains in 14th place.
