Jonathan David is one of the names Barcelona are targeting going into 2025, as the club look to shore up their ranks in the offensive unit.

Barcelona’s interest in David has peaked not only because of the Canadian international’s stellar performances in Ligue 1 but also due to the fact he is set to become a free agent in the summer of 2025.

Indeed, David’s contract at LOSC Lille expires at the end of the season, meaning he will be free to choose any club he desires next summer.

Barcelona, to that end, have emerged as one of the potential suitors, alongside Italian giants Juventus.

Lille president confirms contract offer for David

However, in what could potentially be a massive blow for Barcelona, Lille president Olivier Letang has confirmed that Lille have tabled a contract renewal offer for David.

“We are talking to Jona. He has an offer in his hands and has said that LOSC is his club, but our discussions must remain private,” Letang told Tuttosport.

While it is still unclear whether David will renew his contract, Letang’s statement suggests Lille are ready to go all out, in their bid to retain the services of the Canadian.

A big blow for Barcelona?

This might not bode well for Barcelona, who were weighing up a summer move for David. The club had identified him as the ideal alternative to star man Robert Lewandowski, particularly due to his stellar performances in France.

David has racked up 96 goals in just 200 competitive matches at Lille. In addition to his productivity, the former KAA Gent forward is quite versatile as well, and can operate out wide, if necessary.

This makes him an ideal target for Barcelona, who must find a long-term solution for Lewandowski sooner rather than later.
