Ligue 1 clubs already threatened with bankruptcy

The TV rights saga raises fears of the worst for Ligue 1, where many clubs are living beyond their means.

Too expensive, simply too expensive. While more than 200,000 people are said to have watched Le Havre-PSG via the Telegram app, according to Le Parisien, the price of the DAZN subscription continues to put off regular Ligue 1 followers.

The first consequence of this is the increase in these pirate services. But how can we blame the fans who do not want to spend such a sum? The responsibility should not be placed on the consumer but on the managers who do not assess the true value of their Championship, defends Nicolas, a Ligue 1 fan who has turned to “piracy”, interviewed by L’Equipe. If no one wants to buy your product between 30 and 40 euros per month, you should not put it at that price. And on the League’s side, you should not try to recover 500 million per season if no broadcaster can be profitable at that amount.”

At one point, the LFP was hoping to recover 900 million euros per year from the domestic rights of Ligue 1. For a championship that lasts 10 months, this implies that the broadcaster must recover at least 90 million euros per month to be profitable. With subscriptions, this would represent 3 million subscriptions at 30 euros per month. Unthinkable?

The equation seems insoluble, and should encourage clubs to review their way of life. And for some, this will happen painfully. So we may unfortunately go through club bankruptcies and a devaluation of French football, but this is linked to the distortion between the vision of the leaders of their League and reality,” Nicolas believes.
