Lisandro Martinez says he is “so excited” by the additions of Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui, with both players confirmed as the latest Manchester United signings earlier this week.
We are awaiting news on whether both players will be registered in time for Friday night’s Premier League opening match against Fulham, but it sounds like they were signed with plenty of time for that to be sorted following their moves from Bayern Munich.
De Ligt and Mazraoui not only ease United’s injury problems in defence, with Leny Yoro and Luke Shaw both ruled out for the foreseeable future, but they will improve United’s defensive capabilities tenfold.
Martinez, who joined United two years ago, has already played alongside Mazraoui during his time at Ajax and he arrived in Amsterdam just two weeks before De Ligt left for Juventus in 2019.
The World Cup winner describes the pair as “special” and is excited to line up alongside them in a United shirt this season.
“I’m so excited about Matthijs and Noussair,” Martinez told BBC Sport (H/t The Metro). “We are here to help them and they are really good players, that’s why Manchester United bought them and they will show [that] quickly because they have really good qualities and they like to play football and they are special for our system.
“I think Matthijs will give us a strong personality, playing from the back, defending high, I can’t wait to play with him.”
The new signings made by United this summer should boost morale in the dressing room, after a challenging 2023/24 campaign, which ended with an FA Cup triumph.
Fans will demand better football this time around and it would help if we could keep our star defenders fit, including Martinez, who missed the majority of last season.
