The UEFA Euro 2024 officially culminated last night with Spain’s 2-1 win over England in Berlin. Luis de la Fuente’s men, the best team in the tournament by far, took home all the accolades and rightfully so.

At the centre of the attention on the night was Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal who not only provided the assist for Spain’s opener but also walked away with the Best Young Player of the Tournament award after the match.

While Spain’s all-round display over the tournament was close to flawless, Euro 2024 will largely be remembered as the tournament where Yamal announced his arrival as the next big thing in football.

After all, he broke record after record over the course of the event and finished the event with a goal and four assists.

Youngest debutant at the Euro

At 16 years and 338 days, Yamal became the youngest player to make his debut in the big competition. Notably, the next youngest player after him is now Kacper Kozłowski who was 17 years and 246 days at the time of his debut for Poland.

He also holds the record for being the youngest player to appear in a major tournament semi-final at 16 years and 362 days. 

Additionally, at 17 years and 1 day, he became the youngest player to appear in a Euro or World Cup final.

Youngest player to score at the Euro

Yamal’s jaw-dropping equaliser against France in the semifinal (16 years and 362 days) was his first of the tournament and made him the youngest ever to score at the event, eclipsing Johan Vonlanthen’s record of 18 years and 141 days when he scored in 2004.

Youngest player to assist at the Euro

The youngster notched up his first assist in the event in the team’s opening game against Croatia where he skilfully lobbed the ball into Dani Carvajal’s path for Spain’s third goal.

Youngest player to be named MVP in the Euro

Yamal was named the MVP in Spain’s semifinal clash against France for his breathtaking display and game-changing display. Having set the record at 16 years and 362 days, it is safe to say it will not be broken for a long time.

Youngest ever to win the Euro and the Young Player of the Tournament award

The teenager not only became the youngest player to win the Euro, but was named the Young Player of the Tournament a day after his 17th birthday, establishing a solid lead over his teammate Pedri who was 18 years and 215 days when the Euros began in 2020.

Youngest player to be the assist leader at Euro

Yamal finished the Euros with a staggering four assists to his name. Xavi Simons finished behind him with three while others including Fabian Ruiz and Dani Olmo were two behind the protege.

Youngest player to assist in the Euro knockouts

Yamal has also become the youngest player to ever assist in the Euro knockout stages, but the magnitude of his impact cannot be justified by that statistic alone. After all, he directly contributed to goal in every single one of Spain’s knockout games in the tournament.
