Liverpool to raid Newcastle United?

That is what Jose Fonte is suggesting.

The former Premier League defender played with both of these Liverpool and Newcastle United stars.

Joe Fonte suggesting that Liverpool should target Sven Botman to replace Virgil van Dijk.

Fonte played with Virgil van Dijk at Southampton, then later teamed up with Sven Botman at Lille where they won Ligue 1.

Jose Fonte speaking to JeffBet about Virgil van Dijk and… Sven Botman:

“I would love to see Sven Botman replace Virgil van Dijk at Liverpool and I think he has the ability to do it.

“We won the league together in France and like Van Dijk, he is a monster.

“He is tall, very good in duels, he plays as the left centre-back, he loves a tackle, he is aggressive and still young.

“I just hope that he [Sven Botman] can continue his progress after his injury and stay healthy.

“If he does that then I’m sure he’ll be considered by Liverpool.”

I agree with pretty much all of that, apart from the bit about Liverpool signing Sven Botman.

When somebody is long-term injured, it can be easy to forget about just how good they are.

However, in that 2022/23 season where no team conceded less goals than Newcastle United, when NUFC qualified for the Champions League and got to their first cup final in 24 years, Sven Botman was superb.

He is now hopefully in the very final stages of his recovery and can soon be back in full training. Dan Burn has been excellent but having Sven Botman back available as well would be a huge boost, both for the remainder of this season and beyond.

Sven Botman is nine years younger than Virgil van Dijk and can be part of an exciting high quality United back four for years to come potentially, alongside the likes of Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall.
